System operations

The Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) relies on the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) remaining secure and reliable.

In this context, 'security' means that the power system operates within defined technical limits, and 'reliable' means that the supply of electricity is sufficient to meet the demand for electricity. A secure power system is also designed to withstand a single Credible Contingency Event.

AEMO plays an important role in maintaining security and reliability in the SWIS in accordance with the WEM Rules, which includes dispatching Facilities, assessing generation and network outages, and determining Ancillary Service requirements.

This section of the site provides information about the provision of services that help AEMO manage power system security and reliability in the SWIS. It also explores future challenges and requirements for the SWIS.
