Update - Possible intervention to manage power system security in South Australia (SA) Region

AEMO ELECTRICITY MARKET NOTICE

Update to Market Notice 74554

The synchronous generating units expected to be synchronised in SA from 0730 hrs 01/03/20 to the end of the Pre-dispatch period published at 1500 hrs 29/02/20 are inadequate to maintain sufficient system strength in SA and hence a secure operating state.

AEMO currently estimates that, in the absence of sufficient market response by 1700 hrs 29/02/20, AEMO may need to intervene by issuing a direction requiring one or more SA synchronous generating unit(s) to operate or remain synchronised to maintain power system security in SA.

Reclassification of a Non-Credible Contingency Event: Chalumbin - Turkinje No.7165 132 kV line and Chalumbin - Turkinje No.7166 132 kV line in QLD1 due to Lightning.

AEMO ELECTRICITY MARKET NOTICE

Reclassification of a Non-Credible Contingency Event as a Credible Contingency Event due to Lightning. AEMO considers the simultaneous trip of the following circuits to now be more likely and reasonably possible. Accordingly AEMO has reclassified it as a credible contingency event.

Region: QLD1

Lines: Chalumbin - Turkinje No.7165 132 kV and Chalumbin - Turkinje No.7166 132 kV

AEMO ELECTRICITY MARKET NOTICE

Cancellation of reclassification of a Non-Credible Contingency Event as a Credible Contingency Event due to Lightning. AEMO considers the simultaneous trip of the following circuits is no longer reasonably possible. There is no longer any lightning activity in the vicinity of the following lines. Accordingly its classification has reverted to a non-credible contingency event.

Possible intervention to manage power system security in South Australia (SA) Region

AEMO ELECTRICITY MARKET NOTICE

Possible intervention to manage power system security in South Australia (SA) Region

The combination of synchronous generating units currently expected to be synchronised in SA from 1700 hrs 01/03/2020 will not provide sufficient system strength in SA to maintain the power system in a secure operating state.

In the absence of sufficient market response AEMO may need to intervene by issuing a direction requiring one or more SA synchronous generating unit(s) to operate or remain synchronised from 1700 hrs 01/03/2020 to maintain power system security in SA. Refer to current Transfer Limit Advice for SA system strength on AEMO's website.

If necessary, AEMO will estimate and publish the latest time at which AEMO would need to intervene after the 1230 hrs predispatch run on the 29/02/2020
