Participating in the market

Rule Participants and their Registered Facilities play a vital role in the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM).

A legal entity can register as a Rule Participant in the WEM in the following classes:

  • Market Participant class; and/or
  • Network Operator class.

This section of the website provides links to administrative information, documents and processes needed to participate in the WEM, whether as a prospective, new or a current Rule Participant.

In referring to participants, anyone subject to the WEM Rules is a Rule Participant – and a Rule Participant can belong to more than one Rule Participant Classes (Market Participant class and Network Operator class).

A Rule Participant that participates in any aspect of the Reserve Capacity Mechanism, the Short-Term Electricity Market (STEM) and Real-Time Market is referred to as a Rule Participant in the Market Participant class.
