Project Jupiter

Project Jupiter is a $108 million, three-year project designed to accelerate the integration of rooftop solar, home and community batteries into Western Australia’s main energy system through virtual power plants (VPPs).

The vision is to realise the full potential of Distributed Energy Resources (DER), also known as Consumer Energy Resources (CER), in WA’s energy transition by developing Australia’s first energy system and market where DER is safely and securely integrated at scale for the benefit of the community.

By early 2028 the main objectives for Jupiter are to enable:

  • All new solar and battery systems connected to the network, to be visible, compliant and capable of participating in a VPP.
  • Customers with the choice of ‘opting in’ to a VPP, earning more value from their energy assets.
  • Aggregated customer owned DER to participate in the market providing capacity and network support services.

Project Jupiter will build on the success of Project Symphony, which demonstrated the technical feasibility of VPPs within WA’s main electricity system. By enabling WA households to contribute to a more secure and reliable energy system, Project Jupiter will play a critical role in WA’s transition to a more sustainable energy future.

Project partners

The Australian government announced Project Jupiter in January 2025. The project is partly funded by a $20.8 million grant from the Federal Government’s ARENA Advancing Renewables Program, and is a collaboration between Western Power, Synergy, AEMO, and Energy Policy WA.

It is also key deliverable of the WA Government’s DER Roadmap which are supporting the continued uptake of DER to strengthen WA’s electricity system and continuing providing secure and reliable power.

Knowledge sharing and stakeholder engagement

The Jupiter project partners are committed to knowledge sharing and all reports will be published on the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)’s web page at: ARENA - Project Jupiter.

AEMO also hosts the quarterly WA DER Market Participation Forum to share knowledge of the work being undertaken to deliver key actions from the WA DER Roadmap. We are using this forum and related email distribution list to enable effective consultation and information sharing with current and prospective market participants and other stakeholders impacted by DER integration.
