DER behaviour during disturbances
AEMO has been collecting and analysing data from a wide range of sources to understand DER behaviour in response to power system disturbances. Key findings can be found in:
- Providing an compendium of analysis by AEMO and other stakeholders on the behaviour of distributed PV during power system disturbances conducted during 2018 to 2021
- Analysing the behaviour of DER during disturbances as part of the 2019 Technical Integration of DER Report.

This information has improved AEMO’s ability to anticipate the behaviour of DER in various circumstances. It also contributes crucial input data to inform AEMO’s development of power system models that represent DER behaviour during disturbances, and has informed review of DER performance standards.
Partnerships
This work is being conducted in collaboration with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), Solar Analytics, Wattwatchers, the University of New South Wales, ElectraNet, TasNetworks and Energy Queensland. Key projects include:
- A collaboration between UNSW, ElectraNet, TasNetworks and AEMO, funded by ARENA, to conduct inverter bench testing. Further information on the project can be found here, and the bench testing results can be found here.
- A partnership with Solar Analytics and Wattwatchers on an ARENA funded project on Enhanced Reliability Through Short Time Resolution Data which will improve understanding of DER behaviour during voltage disturbances and resulting dynamic modelling.
- Project MATCH aims to establish a robust monitoring and analysis toolbox to better understand the behaviour of distributed energy resources (DER) and implications for power system security. It will investigate DER behaviour during power system disturbances and seeks to support secure power system operation under high penetrations of DER. The project is being led by UNSW Sydney in partnership with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and Solar Analytics, supported by ARENA funding.
These collaborations have provided key inputs to AEMO’s power system model development, and informed changes to DER performance standards.
