Engineering Roadmap Strategy and Progress Reports
Engineering Roadmaps
The SWIS Engineering Roadmap report published in August 2024:
- Presents a detailed, engineering-focused roadmap.
- Presents AEMO’s view of the technical, engineering, and operational actions required to advance operational capability of the SWIS for times of high renewables contribution.
The Engineering Roadmap to 100% Renewables, published in December 2022:
- A detailed, engineering-focussed roadmap
- Presents AEMO’s view of the technical, engineering, and operational actions required to prepare the NEM to securely and reliably operate at 100% instantaneous renewable penetration for the first time.
- Provides a technical base to inform industry prioritisation of steps necessary to securely, reliably and affordably transition through key milestones on the way to 100% renewables.
- Provides confidence around actions underway and highlights areas requiring further attention
NEM Priority Action Reports
The annual NEM Priority Action Reports outline the activities committed to by AEMO for each financial year (FY) to help prepare the NEM for operation at times of high renewables contribution. These reports also provide a summary of progress made on activities undertaken in the previous year.
-
Engineering Roadmap – FY2025 Priority Actions Report
The Engineering Roadmap – FY2025 Priority Actions report published in August 2024:
- Outlines the activities AEMO plans to undertake in the 2024–25 financial year (FY2025) to help advance the operational capability of the NEM for times of high renewables contribution.
- Summarises the progress made in FY2024 by AEMO and across industry to increase preparedness for high renewables contribution.
-
Engineering Roadmap – FY2024 Priority Actions Report
The Engineering Roadmap – FY2024 Priority Actions report published in July 2023:
- Outlines the activities AEMO plans to undertake in the 2023–24 financial year (FY2024) to help prepare the National Electricity Market (NEM) for operation at times of 100 percent instantaneous renewables.
- Summarises the extensive progress made in FY2023 by AEMO and across industry to increase preparedness for 100% instantaneous renewables.
-
Engineering Roadmap – FY2023 Priority Actions Report
The Priority Actions, published in June 2022:
- Outlines a list of near-term priority actions needed to prepare the NEM power system for six identified future operational conditions, including preparation for 100% instantaneous penetration of renewables
- Summarises AEMO’s Engineering Framework action commitments for the 2022-2023 financial year
Engineering Framework
The Engineering Roadmaps originated from the NEM Engineering Framework which:
- Identified possible future operational conditions in the NEM.
- Consolidated a view of current work.
- Aimed to bridge the gap between current work and future operating conditions.
-
Initial Roadmap
The Initial Roadmap, published in December 2021:
- Summarises the outcomes of a gap identification process undertaken in collaboration with stakeholders
- Highlights the key strategic decisions and next steps required to enable a secure and efficient transition to future operational conditions
-
Operational Conditions Summary
The Operational Conditions Summary, published in July 2021:
- Summarises the journey to date for the Engineering Framework and how the framework links with ongoing Energy Security Board (ESB) and Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) reform processes.
- Explains and summarises the purpose of the Engineering Framework operational conditions.
-
Engineering Framework March 2021 Report
The Engineering Framework March 2021 Report, published in March 2021:
- Explains what the Engineering Framework is, why it’s needed, and AEMO’s proposed approach to preparing for future system conditions.
- Summarises the work in progress across industry to prepare for future system operation
-
Engineering Framework Information Pack
The information pack, published in December 2020 provided an overview of the Engineering Framework, including:
- What to expect
- Benefits of the Framework
- Journey from the RIS
- How the Framework fits with other industry processes and AEMO publications
Information in this pack has been superseded by the March 2021 report (above).
SWIS Renewable Integration reports
The 2024 SWIS Engineering Roadmap builds on the previous reports published by AEMO such as the Integrating Utility scale Renewables and Distributed Energy Resources in the SWIS in March 2019, and the Renewable Energy Integration – SWIS Update in September 2021.
