AEMO timing requirements for the provision of information for connecting new plant and network changes

For generator and network changes AEMO has minimum timeline requirements for the provision of information. These are in place so that AEMO has enough time to undertake internal processes and update its various systems such as AEMO’s Energy Management System (EMS), constraint equations and dynamic models. 

These timeline requirements are only applicable for AEMO’s needs. Proponents are strongly advised to also check with their connecting network service provider for their separate timeline requirements.

AEMO’s Energy Management System (EMS) updates

AEMO updates its EMS with a database/display load every fortnight (scheduled on a Thursday) - the first one for 2023 was on Thursday 19 January. The database load is usually moved for public holidays and generally there is a pause over late December/early January. The database changes are closed the Tuesday on the previous week (e.g. on 10 January for 19 January load). The database load can be cancelled or delayed due to operational and power system issues (although this is rare).

Note:

  • Registration includes full registration or notifiable exemption, whichever is first.

  • SCADA testing of new generator links needs to be done prior to registration – and this requires an EMS update to start the testing.

  • Network Outage Scheduler (NOS) new equipment needs the equipment to also be modelled in the EMS.

  • SCADA signal lists need to be agreed between AEMO, the proponent and the connecting NSP.
