Project EDGE news and knowledge sharing

Throughout Project EDGE, AEMO, AusNet Services and Mondo are committed to sharing information and knowledge that will benefit the broader industry and provide insights into the project objectives.

Reports, presentations and webinar recordings can be found below. This material, and knowledge shared by other relevant ARENA supported projects are available on the ARENA Knowledge Bank site.

Three new Aggregators join Project EDGE

The development of a world first Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Marketplace through Australia’s Project EDGE commenced its field trial phase in May 2022.

Project partners, AEMO, AusNet Services and Mondo are pleased to announce we have engaged three additional aggregators to participate in the marketplace trial

We welcome Discover Energy, Rheem and Combined Energy Technologies and AGL Energy to Project EDGE. As we progress through the operational phase of the trial, Discover Energy and Rheem and Combined Energy Technologies will actively operate in the EDGE DER marketplace field trials with their own systems and customers.

AGL has joined Project EDGE as a Research Participant. As a leading Virtual Power Plant (VPP) retailer, AGL will enhance the EDGE evidence base by providing real world insights from its own in-market VPP products and trials.

Together, these additional Aggregators will help Project EDGE generate a more rich and robust evidence base from which it will continue to inform the design and implementation of current electricity market reforms so they are in the best interests of all electricity consumers.

Further information and insights from Project EDGE can be found here.

Project EDGE delivers key insights with two major knowledge sharing reports

Project EDGE (Energy Demand and Generation Exchange) has moved a step closer to developing a two-sided marketplace for Distributed Energy Resources (DER), publishing two key project reports from the initial design and build phase.

The Public Interim Report is a significant project milestone which expands on the key insights, challenges and learnings complied over the initial 18-month period of the 3-year project, marking the transition from Design into field trial operation and evidence development.

The Public Customer Insight and Engagement Study Interim Report examines perceptions of, and decision-making around, Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) among potential residential and business customers, and current residential battery owners.

To assist interested parties in understanding more about the content of these reports, the Project EDGE team will be holding two public webinars. We will present and discuss findings and key insights from the milestone reports at these sessions.

The Customer Insights Study Webinar will be held 2:00pm to 3:30pm (AEST) Tuesday 7 June and The Public Interim Report Webinar 2:00pm to 3:30pm (AEST) Thursday 9 June. Both webinars will be recorded and shared on the Project EDGE website.

Project EDGE Public Webinar (7 June 2022)

In June 2022, Project EDGE released a significant project milestone in the Public Interim Report. Following the release of the report, Project EDGE held a public webinar to discuss the key insights, challenges and learnings complied over the initial 18-month period of the 3 year project, marking the transition from Design into field trial operation and empirical evidence development. The interim report contains a lot of design information, lessons learned and key questions for industry to solve together and for which EDGE will support with an evidence base over the next 12 months.

Project EDGE Customer Insights Study Webinar (7 June 2022)

In June 2022, Project EDGE released a major deliverable in the Public Customer Insight and Engagement Study Interim Report. Following the release of the report, Project EDGE with Deakin University held a public webinar to discuss the Customer Insights Study which delves into the perceptions and decision making around Virtual Power Plants among potential residential and business customers, and current residential battery owners.

Project Edge - Energy Systems Integration Group Webinar (30th March 2022)

On 30th March 2022, Project EDGE presented to the Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG). This presentation provided an overview of the project, learnings to date and research questions that aim to answer key questions across industry on the customer needs, alignment to the National Electricity Objectives, wholesale integration capability, local network services requirements, operation within Dynamic Operating Envelopes (DOEs), how to efficiently exchange data at scale, and the roles and responsibilities of each of the actors within the DER Marketplace.

Project EDGE – University of Melbourne Research Update

The University of Melbourne recently published a research update regarding their work with Project Edge. Their article Transforming the grid for a renewables-based future details the University’s role in developing a blueprint for an electricity network that supports local low-carbon technologies. The full article can be found in the link below.

Project EDGE MVP Showcase

In December 2021, Project EDGE provided a demonstration of the minimum viable product (MVP) version of the DER marketplace to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency as part of their Milestone 2 deliverables. This demonstration showcased the steps and processes taking place in the DER Marketplace environment, and how each role (Aggregator, Distributed System Operator and AEMO) interacts.

The video can be found below.

A summary of the use cases is outlined in this presentation.

Project EDGE – Melbourne Energy Institute Public Webinar recording

In October 2021, AEMO and AusNet Services provided a joint presentation to the Melbourne Energy Institute on the benefits and challenges associated with the implementation of operating envelopes as being tested in Project EDGE.

The recording can be found here.
