AEMO chairs the Power System Operation Working Group (PSO-WG), a gathering of government, market participant and other industry representatives that advises on the development of changes to the Market Rules that relate to matters of power systems operation.
The working group recommendations inform the Western Australian Government Energy Transformation Strategy as part of the Delivering the Future Power System work stream.
Contingency response technical framework
The Energy Transformation will include a new Essential System Service Framework to ensure that support services can be securely and efficiently procured for the future power system. These conditions will be characterised by higher proportions of intermittent and non-synchronous generation, which creates greater and more sophisticated demands on the resilience of the system to withstand sudden major shocks (“contingency events”).
AEMO has developed and validated a technical framework to both quantify and manage these future challenges. The approach is described in the technical proposal below, which has been presented to and reviewed by the PSO-WG:
- Contingency Frequency Response in the SWIS (2.3 MB, pdf)
The framework will be used as the technical underpinning in the market design for future Essential System frequency control services.
