TransGrid has recently published a Project Specification Consultation Report for Managing Sydney East substation’s asset risks.

The transformers at Sydney East play a crucial role in providing reliable supply of electricity to the region. However, the age of the original three transformers that were installed in 1974 is leading to deteriorating condition and performance issues which are expected to worsen over time.

Further deterioration will increase the likelihood of equipment failure which may cause prolonged and frequent involuntary load shedding at a transmission node supplying Sydney.

Among the five remediation options investigated, TransGrid considers that the largest avoided involuntary load shedding net benefits come from the option that involves decommissioning of transformer 1, replacement of transformer 2 with a new asset, and replacement of transformer 3 with a redeployed three-phase 375 MVA asset. The estimated capital cost for this option is $12.3 million.

In accordance with the requirements of the Rules, a summary of the Project Specification Consultation Report is made available on AEMO’s website. A copy of the Project Specification Consultation Report can also be obtained from TransGrid’s RIT-T Consultations webpage  or by emailing RIT-TConsultations@transgrid.com.au.

Submissions Project Specification Consultation Report are required by the closing date of 15th March 2019.
